Does a single axle trailer need brakes?
The need for trailer brakes, as has been pointed out in other answers, is required by some jurisdictions. Several factors are considered in this safety requirement. The weight of the towing vehicle and the gross weight of the trailer (with load) are probably the most important. The best rule of thumb is that if the gross weight of the trailer exceeds the gross weight of the tow vehicle, trailer brakes are needed.
